As you all know by now our baby boy Aiden was born last Thursday Sept 30th at 4:56pm. Aiden had a very rough start in this world but is doing very well now!!
On Wednesday Sept 29th (the day I had predicted) at just after 3pm my water broke. Greg ran around the house frantically (it was pretty funny)! We got to the hospital a little after 4. Because I was only having a few sporadic contractions and the Dr's knew I wanted to avoid pitocin as long as possible they allowed me to walk around and try to get things started naturally. By 9pm the contractions were pretty strong and regular. Then around 12:30 I wasn't progressing very well on my own and since my water had broken they started pitocin, I completely understand why they call it the pits!! It was awful, I was in pretty hard labor with no more then a few seconds to recover between contractions but I was still not progressing in dilation! So they stopped the pitocin as it wasn't helping and I was still not far enough along to have an epidural. By 4am I was finally able to get the epidural! And as my husband and everyone else says a whole new woman! By 8:30 am I was getting pretty uncomfortable again and still only dilated to a 5! So I got another boost of the epidural. Several hours later still not progressing they had me in all kinds of positions, I was basically on my head at one point!!
Aiden was never in distress so they were fine letting me go until about 3pm when I was checked again and had not progressed at all since 8:30 am. This is when I was told a C-section was inevitable! I was completely freaked out I had not prepared myself for this at all but because it had now been 24hrs since my water broke they had no other choice! I can't even explain the feelings I had, I felt like I had failed at giving birth! I mean women all over the world forever have done this, why can't I!
Finally at 4:30 they wheeled me down for my c-section and at 4:56 my beautiful baby boy was born. We didn't know what was wrong but we knew something had to be wrong, they never showed him to us they just whisked him out of the room within a second! Then it seemed like an hour went by before we heard him cry. Once we heard him everything was well with the world again. Later we found out that they had to use 2 forms of resuscitation on him as he had a large glob of mucus blocking his airway that came out when they removed the tool that was supposed to help him breath (but didn't at first). When a baby is born they test a bunch of reflexes and breathing, color and such, it's call the APGAR score, it's tested at 1minute, 5minutes, and 10 minutes past birth, the score is out of a possible 10. Aiden's scores were 2, 6 and 9. Thankfully there seems to be no problems at all, he had his first visit with the pediatrician on Monday and got two thumbs up!
When Aiden was born he weighed 8lbs 3 oz, when we left the hospital on Saturday he was 7lbs 14 oz and by Monday he was back up to 8lbs 6oz! He's a big boy, 21.5 inches long. All of his measurements are above average which is good. The Dr even said his hand movements are about 4 weeks ahead of schedule!!
We couldn't be happier or prouder of our baby boy, Aiden Rusty Bodai!
